At this beautiful spot, there's a bench of a different kind, where you can sit facing each other and enjoy the view in the same direction. An angle between the bench's legs makes this possible.

It is a memorial to an unpunished murder that occurred deep in the forest around 285 years ago. A large wooden cross stands on the base of the so-called Tirolerstein, located in the heart of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and directly on the border between the Birkenfeld and Trier-Saarburg districts. A seating area in front of it invites you to take a break in the greenery. Since the former chapel in the nearby Neuhütten district of Muhl was converted into the National Park Church a few years ago, and since then, star hikes have been held there, the Tirolerstein has also been a place where believers occasionally hold services.

While only a few visible relics have survived from another equally monumental structure of early architectural history in the area of present-day Germany, namely the Roman Limes – the fortified border between the Roman provinces of Germania and the unconquered territories – the “Celtic Ring Wall” here, although much older, can be admired in an almost unbelievably good condition.

Man has known how to build houses, buildings of all kinds, walls to protect himself and this surrounding wall is exceptional (built ~ in -400 and abandoned ~ in the year -100 BC) by its size and by its construction technique at the top of a mountain which today looks more like an enormous pile of stones but fortunately well explained on educational panels in several languages.
