The keep of Ewsum The round gun tower of Ewsum Castle near Middelstum was built in 1472 by knight Onno van Ewsum. With its thick walls and loopholes, it offered protection during a time of war and the rise of firearms. This is the most important remaining example of the once impressive castle; the rest was demolished in the 19th century. Today, the tower is part of the historic castle grounds, along with gardens and heritage belonging to Het Groninger Landschap (The Groningen Landscape).

You can sit inside or outside. They have a wide selection of teas, but they also serve coffee and cappuccino. Friendly staff served me quite quickly. Not too expensive.

Discover the endless starry sky Far away from artificial light sources, it's so dark here at night that you can see everything. You'll see more stars than you've ever seen before. Several celestial platforms are scattered throughout the nature reserve. Lie down and gaze up; you could spend hours here. You'll find the celestial platforms at the Vlinderbalg, Achter de Zwarten, and on the Zoutkamperplaat. Near one of the towers during the day? Then you can, of course, also use them for animal watching.

Reitdiepveer The Reitdiep forms the separation between Middag-Humsterland and the Hogeland. The ferry service between Aduarderzijl and Schaphalsterzijl forms a beautiful connection between both historical landscapes.

The birdsong in early summer is indescribable. A beautifully landscaped nature reserve with fantastic bike paths!

And only hear the birds and the sound of the sea.

Nice place to stop for a break, beautifully maintained and with great shady spots under the trees in front.
