The oldest part of the church is the rectangular chancel, built in the early 13th century. This part still has four pointed arch windows. There are also two bricked-up priest's entrances in the north and south walls. The chancel is straight and decorated with two closed round-arch windows and three white, climbing round-arch niches in the gable. A buttress was also placed against the chancel to prevent it from sinking. The tower is several decades younger and is characterized by large wall anchors.

The area of De Onlanden is located in the north of Drenthe, near the city of Groningen, and is approximately 2500 hectares in size.
