In fact, it was first a monastery founded in the 7th century by Saint Winoc on lands donated near the woods of Wormhout by Hérémard1. The first settlement having been destroyed following the Viking raids in France, the abbey was refounded around 900, when a church was built in the lower part of Bergues under the impetus of Baldwin II of Flanders2. The latter brought the relics of Saint Winoc there, placed canons there and endowed the chapter with goods and privileges. The abbey of Saint-Winoc, properly speaking, built later in the 11th century, is attached to the order of Saint-Benoît and the diocese of Ypres.
