During the 1914-18 War Cassel was at different periods the headquarters of both Marshal Foch and Lord Plumer. At the end of May 1940 the western flank of the British Expeditionary Force was on the line Dunkirk-Cassel-Hazebrouck, and Cassel was in the section defended by the 48th and 44th Division on May 28th-29th. There are now nearly 100, 1939-45 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, almost 20 are unidentified and one of the soldiers from the United Kingdom whose grave could not be precisely located is commemorated by a special memorial inscribed "Buried near this spot". A narrow passage on Rue Bollaert Le Gavrian leads to the Promenade des Remarts, which takes you along the ramparts of Cassel.

Cassel Town Hall, located on the Grand Place

A former inn (estaminet) – which explains the name – with a remarkable facade. Café Gambrinus was the headquarters of the agricultural union, the Hop Growers' Union, and the Friends of Fromulus, who organize the annual carnival. The café hosted many meetings and the feast of the Saint Eloi festival. The dining room served as offices for the Entr'aide Rurale bank and the Agricultural Insurance Agency.

The equestrian statue of Marshal Foch. His statue was placed here because he chose Cassel as his command post in 1914-'15. During that period he coordinated the allied armies. The statue was inaugurated in 1928, one year later he died.
