Wayside crosses, field crosses, and crossroads can be found not only in villages or in nature, but also in literature. Perhaps the most famous crucifix of this type can be traced back to the author Giovanni Guareschi (1908 to 1968). He is the spiritual father of the humorous stories about the two protagonists 'Don Camillo' and 'Peppone'. Guareschi incorporated another main character into his stories – known and popular far beyond Italy's borders –: the crucified Christ, who speaks to Don Camillo from the crucifix on the high altar. The author himself makes the following comment: "So one must explain: If the priests feel offended by Don Camillo, they can smash a candlestick on my skull for all I care; if the communists feel offended by Peppone, they can break a club on my back; but if someone feels offended by Christ's speeches, there's nothing one can do. Whoever speaks in my stories... is my Christ, that is, the voice of my conscience. My personal business, my cause. And therefore: each for himself, and God for all." (G. Guareschi)

The bench with the cross is said to have been donated by Bandix "Böle" Bonken and is named after him. Bandix Bonken was born in 1839 on Hallig Gröde and was called "Böle," the Hallig Frisian term for "uncle." He was a teacher and cantor on Amrum from 1865 to 1893 and attempted to spread "Christian revival" among the island's population by imposing strict rules. The inscription on the cross on the "Böle Bonken bench" reads "Uun Jesus as rau an Frees" and means "In Jesus there is rest and peace." Non-Frisian speakers often mistakenly interpret the inscription as "Jesus was also a rough Frisian."

The single-nave, thatched building, constructed of fieldstone and brick, was built around 1240 as a simple church and houses several special art treasures, such as the group of apostles, the baptismal font, and an altar with an altarpiece. The neo-Romanesque bell tower was built in 1908.

Unknown bodies washed ashore were intended to be given a simple but dignified burial. Between 1906 and 1969, 32 people found their final resting place in the "Cemetery of the Homeless," as this quiet place is also called. The graves are marked with simple wooden crosses bearing the date of discovery.
