Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the deep Roya Gorges from nearly 500 meters above sea level, Malmort Castle bears witness to an impressive military past. Built in the 13th century, it was restored in the 17th century and played a strategic role during the conflicts of the French Revolution. Although now reduced to ruins, this medieval ruin retains all its majesty. Its breathtaking appearance and spectacular location make it a must-see destination for lovers of history and magnificent landscapes. From its heights, the view extends over the picturesque villages of Saorge and Fontan, offering an exceptional panorama. A visit to the site is also a wonderful opportunity to venture into the heart of one of the most preserved and mysterious valleys in the Alpes-Maritimes.

There are several paths to get to Malmort Castle.

Passing by the Sainte Croix Chapel, you can continue to the heights of Saorge. Don't hesitate to climb to La Pinée and then continue to the Anan Pass if you have the energy :) For the more athletic, it's possible to reach the summit of Anan and its breathtaking view of the valley.

If you are in Saorge, take a look at the monastery. There is a nice talk about the monastery and many small things that date back to the time of the Franciscans.

Saorge is a small sleepy village in the mountains. There are also a few accommodations here. Saorge can only be explored on foot. There are no roads in the village.

The Peiremont circuit on the heights of Saorge is easy and very pleasant. Beginning at the level of the superb Franciscan monastery which deserves a visit (cloister, recently renovated church, garden), this circuit follows often shaded paths. In June, the brooms of Spain embellish the landscape. A small pause is essential at the level of the Sainte Croix chapel.
