Fantastic picturesque landscape, idyllic

In 1885, Grand Duchess Sophie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach became the sole heir to Goethe's handwritten estate. From then on, the Dutch princess, who came to Weimar in 1842, pursued the ambitious goal of making these writings accessible to the public: in a remarkably short time, she developed the plan for the first complete edition of his works, the Weimar Edition. She won over German scholars of her choice for the major project, kept some of his writings and founded the Goethe and Schiller Archive, the first research-based literary archive in Germany.

The castle was built in the 17th century in the Baroque style. Originally it was a manor house built on behalf of Count von Hatzfeldt. In the 18th century it was remodeled in the Rococo style. The castle was inhabited by various noble families and served as a residence and representative residence.
