A graduation tower (also known as a lick tower) is a facility used in the process of salt extraction from brine to increase the salt concentration (“graduate”) and to improve the quality of the salt extracted.

Winegrowing in Bad Sulza is first mentioned in a document from the Abbess of Quedlinburg from 1195. Before salt production dominated the town, winegrowing was an important industry. After the Second World War, however, it came to a standstill and it was not until the mid-1960s that the agricultural businesses of the time began to rebuild it. The Sonnendorf vineyard was planted in 1975. During this time, however, only grapes were produced and sold to the state winery. Of the 13 hectares of vineyards in Thuringia during the years of reunification, 11 hectares were in Sonnendorf. (...from information board)
