The oldest mention of Münchenroda dates back to 1255; the village belonged to the Bürgel Monastery. The church's origins date back to this time. The typical floor plan of a hall church with a recessed, rectangular choir tower is clearly visible. The regular Romanesque limestone masonry still shows some incised joints and remains of Romanesque windows (also on the west wall) on the north wall.

Every year in March, a special natural spectacle unfolds on this forest slope. Countless wild snowflakes bloom, displaying their characteristic bell-shaped white blossoms with greenish-yellow flecks. This plant, from the Amaryllis family, has spread across a large area like a carpet.

Today, after work, I spontaneously decided to take a detour to Großschwabhausen. This walk had been on my to-do list for a long time. I've already seen the snowflake forest in Tal-Holz, near Milda, but the Großschwabhausen Hain is truly a sensation! It's so amazing, I never would have imagined it! The entire forest is covered in snowflakes, everything is white! And if it isn't exactly white, then it's purple from the liverworts, which are already in bloom. Here and there, a woodpecker tapped, the chaffinches chirped, the tits sang their spring song! It couldn't be more idyllic. There's a parking lot right nearby! You can also take the train directly to the forest. The forest is very close to the train station.

The path was covered with a layer of loose gravel, you should roll a little slowly when going down.

At the entrance to the town there is a historic waterworks, which is still in operation today as a distribution and pumping station. Since 12.o7. 2022 a small museum of "Jena Wasser". Visiting hours only after registration.

Driving out of Jena, about 100 meters after the paper mill, is the Mühltal pumping station, built around 1897/99. The western part plus the city center has always been supplied with water from here. The whole thing has been modernized and has been a small museum since July 11th, 2022. Opening hours probably only after registration.

Breathtaking, I've never seen so many snowflakes anywhere else. The grove makes a lovely circular walk. Unfortunately, there are no signs, but from the sports hall parking lot, simply walk past the shell limestone and straight into the forest. Highly recommended for nature lovers.🌱👍
