Buchenwald Concentration Camp, officially KL Buchenwald, was one of the largest concentration camps on German soil. It operated as a forced labor camp on the Ettersberg hill near Weimar between July 1937 and April 1945. A total of approximately 277,800 people from 50 countries were imprisoned in Buchenwald during this period.[1] The death toll is estimated at around 56,000, including 15,000 Soviet citizens, 7,000 Poles, 6,000 Hungarians, and 3,000 French citizens.[2] As the 3rd US Army approached on April 11, 1945, the prisoners took control of the camp from the retreating SS, arrested 125 of the guards, opened the gates, and raised a white flag.

The inmates had to perform forced labor under inhumane conditions, sometimes until they died. After the end of the Second World War, the concentration camp was continued to be operated by the Russian army as an internment camp for Nazi leaders, some of whom suffered under the same prison conditions as the prisoners during the Third Reich.

Since the first palace and park complexes were built at the beginning of the 18th century, Ettersburg was a popular hunting and summer residence for the ducal family of Saxony-Weimar and Eisenach. Anna Amalia gathered a literary and artistic circle around her here. The extensive landscape park with its gardens and the "Pückler-Schlag" is a gem of garden art.

The linden trees stand in a well-maintained meadow and are surrounded by a dense young forest of birch, black alder, and other trees. It creates the effect of a natural colonnade.
