    Per Wismar, il periodo anseatico iniziò il 6 settembre 1259, quando gli inviati di Lubecca e Rostock si incontrarono a Wismar e siglarono il trattato di protezione. Nel Medioevo, la città era un importante membro della Lega Anseatica. Dal 1238 al 1250 nacque la nuova città di Wismar, e Wismar raggiunse l'estensione che durò fino al XVIII secolo. La Speicherstadt fu costruita nel porto dal 1862. Fu costruito il primo magazzino e nel 1888 fu istituita la nuova dogana granducale.
