    L'edificio progettato da Jean Nouvel è costruito in vetro, alluminio e cemento. L'Istituto ha l'obiettivo di diffondere le ricchezze del mondo arabo e promuovere la cooperazione tra il mondo orientale e quello occidentale. Una serie di luci nella pavimentazione del marciapiede e della piazza antistante l'edificio conducono all'ingresso esposto a sud. Bella la facciata: composta da 240 pannelli con numerosi diaframmi che si aprono o si chiudono a seconda della forza della luce solare. Il tutto sembra una chiesa di pizzo ed evoca un'atmosfera araba.

    Fondamentalmente l'edificio, costituito in gran parte da vetro e acciaio, non è stilisticamente molto lontano dalla piramide del Louvre. Tuttavia, sul lato sud dell'IMA sono stati installati pannelli di vetro, che ricordano le tradizionali grate di legno arabe (Mashrabiyya) che sostituiscono le finestre in molti paesi del Medio Oriente.
