    Tomé de Sousa (1503–1579) fu il primo governatore generale della colonia portoghese del Brasile dal 1549 al 1553. Era un nobile e soldato nato a Rates, Póvoa de Varzim. Sousa nacque nobile e partecipò a spedizioni militari in Africa, combatté i Mori e comandò il nau Conceição nell'India portoghese, parte dell'armata di Fernão de Andrade.

    Sousa fu il primo cavaliere comandante del monastero medievale di Rates, rifondato nel 1100 d.C. e sciolto nel XVI secolo.
