    Dal punto di vista stilistico, il Palazzo Elettorale è uno degli ultimi edifici del cosiddetto “Rinascimento tedesco”. L'ala nord, costruita più tardi, è in questo stile. L'esterno, con le sue torrette a bovindo su tutti gli angoli, è riccamente decorato (soprattutto sulle finestre). È stato restaurato riportandolo allo stato originale, compresi i tetti. All'interno si trovava un tempo una grande scalinata principale realizzata da Balthasar Neumann, che fu rimossa durante la dominazione francese.

    Sebbene il palazzo sia stato costruito nel periodo barocco, è influenzato in modo unico dalle forme manieristiche del tardo Rinascimento tedesco. Il castello venne distrutto da un incendio nel 1942 e ricostruito nel 1948. Le facciate del Palazzo Elettorale, con i loro caratteristici elementi decorativi, sono state ridipinte nel loro colore rosso originale nel 1990.
    Purtroppo la mostra permanente del Museo centrale romano-germanico nel castello è chiusa definitivamente e si prevede che riaprirà i battenti altrove nel 2024. Maggiori informazioni su web.rgzm.de
