The Helfensteine are a striking example of ancient volcanic activity, characterized by their bizarre basaltic rock formations. These are remnants of a volcanic conduit that formed approximately 13-15 million years ago. A key feature is the presence of characteristic, often hexagonal, horizontal basalt columns, which formed as the basaltic melt cooled relatively rapidly. The area has been recognized with the 'National Geotope' certificate for its outstanding geological significance.

Are there specific hiking trails or routes recommended around the Helfensteine?

Yes, the Helfensteine area is crisscrossed with numerous hiking trails. Popular options include sections of the premium Habichtswaldsteig and the 'Alpenpfad'. Many trails offer opportunities to explore the unique basalt formations and enjoy panoramic views.

How difficult is the terrain around Helfensteine, and is it suitable for beginners?
