Sand Beach is a very short walk from the parking area, but there are a few side paths to explore the surrounding woods and rocky ways around the ocean. Having a sandy beach in this area is very uncommon. Sand Beach is one of only two beaches on the Atlantic seashore north of Cape Hatteras that has sand and sediment made of calcium carbonate particles, which are seashell bits.
