The Kumbheshwar is one of the Kathmandu valley's oldest temples and may even have been the nucleus of the future city of Patan (1392 onward). While the temple's origins lie in the mists of antiquity, it remains an essential part of the city's religious life. It is also one of only two sites in the whole of the valley where one may observe a five-tiered pagoda (the other is the Nyatapola temple, in Bhaktapur).
