In the central aisle, directly in front of the steps leading to the choir, a terrazzo mosaic slab is embedded in the floor. It marks the spot where the oak tree with the first chapel once stood. The inscription on the slab commemorates: "Here stood the oak tree with the image of grace from 1750 to 1823."

In 1879, the chapel, built between 1823 and 1831, was demolished to make way for the present church, built on the existing octagon. The foundation stone was laid on June 13, 1879, and after a construction period of about a year, the new church building was ceremoniously consecrated on September 8, 1880.

The place of pilgrimage dates back to the middle / end of the 18th century, when reports of miraculous healings and defense against cattle epidemics in front of a miraculous image were reported. When the activities of monastic orders in the Prussian parts of Germany (also in Aachen) were restricted in 1875, Moresnet-Chapelle benefited from the emigration of monastic orders from Aachen and was further developed into a supra-regional place of pilgrimage.
