Generally speaking, it was a very ambitious task to build a tunnel here. It must be remembered that there were no machines like today and dynamite had not yet been invented. The engineers had to rely on hydraulic engineering because tunnel construction was not yet as advanced. All in all, it was a project of the century.

Another challenge during this period of railway development was financing. Since no more investors could be found, at first less money was flowing and later none at all. The result was that at first less work was carried out and then work stopped.

Vandring

The name Alte Eisenbahn refers to a construction site of the Köln-Minden-Thüringischen-Verbindungs-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (KMTVEG) of 1847, which remained unfinished after its bankruptcy as an investment ruin. It was planned to run the later railway line Hamm-Warburg from Paderborn via Borchen and Lichtenau to Borlinghausen. At the heart of the entire area was the tunnel construction that had already begun, which had already been completed by the time construction was discontinued. The public was told that the end of the construction was caused by permanent flooding. Later, the construction was blown up for safety reasons.
