About Summit Cycles

Welcome to the Summit Cycles Komoot page, for those of you who dont know us we've been axle deep in all things cycling in and around cycling in Aberystwyth, West Wales, since 1998.
We are a shop owned and run by people who love to ride, in fact one of the reasons Summit Cycles exists at all is because Joe, its founder, naively thought he would have more time to ride if he was self employed!
Having ridden modified old tourers, hacked CX & road bikes around the local forest roads for years we think modern gravel bikes are the perfect tools for exploring Ceredigion's varied terrain.
We'll be adding all sorts of routes here, but the focus will be on mixed trails, gravel and adventure. Day rides and longer routes that can be ridden in a 'big' day, or split into an overnighter. If you're Bikepacking curious give us a shout, we'll be renting frame bags from spring 2021.
Please remember that some of these routes are quite remote. In addition to food, water and spare clothing would recommend a minimum of 2 spares tubes, a patch kit, a pump, basic first aid and a foil bivy bag. If you are unfortunate enough to have a prang you could be stuck in the hills for a long time awaiting help. Komoot is a great navigational tool, just remember to down load the routes for off line use if you are using a phone for navigation. We would also suggest using an off line Ordnance Survey app such as OSMaps or ViewRanger, again with downloaded maps for back up.
Lastly make sure you have What3words on your phone so you can pinpoint your location for any rescue services. Hopefully you'll never need it, but hey, play safe!
Think smiles per hour, not miles. #ridethybike #leavenotrace

A challenging gravel or MTB tour looping South around the Brecon Beacons and returning to the coast via sections of the Cambrian Way.
The route is just under 400km and can be ridden as a fast and light 2 or 3 day blitzkrieg, or a more relaxing 4 or 5 day trip. It covers forest roads, back lanes, open moorland, and in South Wales a very rough section of the Sarn Helen which will fox even the most skilled gravel bike riders.
However you choose to approach the route you can't help but be bowled over by the stunning scenery and the beautiful transitions in landscape in as you cross the Cambrian mountains into the Beacons, to the rolling hills of Mid Wales & Offa's dyke. There are plenty of village shops, pubs and wild camping locations on route. As always set up late, pack early & leave no trace.

From the Great Orme in Conwy to Worms Head on the Gower, this challenging off road route highlights the stunning transitions in scenery from North to South Wales. Covering some of the highest off road passes via ancient Roman & drovers roads we guarantee that traveling this route on a bicycle will give you a new appreciation for Wales and better understanding of its mountain ranges and valleys.
With railway connections at Conwy, Aberystwyth & Swansea this is a route that can be tackled in sections or as a 5/7 day continuous tour. The distances may not be huge, but the rough surfaces and high passes (particularly in the North) mean that average speeds will be lower than you might think. Plenty of opportunity for resupply in the North & South, less so in middle, particularly from Machynlleth to Llanwrtyd Wells.
Multiple opportunities for wild camping - as always arrive late, pack up early & leave no trace.
We are developing a version of this route for gravel bikes, so please keep an eye on our social media & check back.

A mixed surface loop, this is what 'all road' bikes were made for. Start out on narrow back lanes with some lung busting climbs, move onto forest roads and deserted uplands. Enjoy.
      Another perfect summer overnighter as an intro to bikepacking. Lots of secluded bivi spots {arrive late, leave early #leavenotrace}

Italy has the Strada Bianca, we have the Strada Florida - 85km of the finest gravel forest roads in Wales. Its a demanding & exposed route. If you are building up to the full route, or the weather turns beastly take note of the 3 pinch point locations where the loop can easily be shortened. If you fancy a really big day make it an out and back via the Ystwyth Valley cycle trail.

We're not going to say the only reason this ride exists is that it gives you an opportunity to visit the River Side cafe in Tregaron...but its kind of true. Its its closed you timed it all wrong..Oh, and turn right after the bridge in Tregaron. Left for a mile down the Tregaron road if its open. A great introduction to the huge Tywi forest which stretches to Llyn Brianne and beyond. Quite exposed in bad weather!
If you fancy a bigger day out ride from Aberystwyth via the Ystwyth Valley cycle trail.

Picturesque tour of the upper Ystwyth Valley via Hafod, Cwmystwyth & Myherin forest, passing a few good picnic or swimming spots, weather permitting!
Add an hour, hour thirty & you could include the Ystwyth cycle trail out and back from Aberystwyth & leave the car at home.

Classic 100% gravel & forest road loop out to the Wye valley near Llangurig. Look out for Cae Gaer, site of a roman fort, as you head East separated from the A44 by the Wye.
This can easily become a longer ride from Aberystwyth using the Ystwyth valley cycle trail to access the Arch via Pontrhydygroes and the Hafod estate.
