North York Moors National Park

Ready for a two-wheel adventure?

The North York Moors is a fantastic location for cycling, whether you're a family cyclist or a world-class mountain biker.

If you're looking for inspiration, check out our downloadable cycling routes, right across the North York Moors and Howardian Hills. We have miles of country roads, bridleways, forest tracks and disused railway lines, and there are three dedicated cycling hubs:

Sutton Bank - for families and those new to mountain biking

Dalby Forest - for families right through to more experienced mountain bikers

Yorkshire Cycle Hub - for more experienced mountain bikers and road cyclists

You can see the best of the National Park on the 'Moor to Sea Cycle Network' Collection – 150 miles of pedal-powered freedom, taking you through some of the finest scenery in Britain.

If you'd rather stick to our quiet moorland roads, the 171-mile North York Moors Cycleway collection guides road cyclists in a figure of eight loop using quieter roads and past many of the landscape’s highlights.

For a taste of the best and most varied scenery in the Esk Valley, head out on this eastern loop from Danby train station.

The villages on the first half of the route are some of the most charming in the whole valley. Lealholm, Egton and Egton Bridge reward you with stepping stones and sleepy village

This is a lovely shorter loop from historic Grosmont to the idyllic riverside hamlet of Beck Hole. The first half takes you through gorgeous woodland, while the second half returns alongside the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The evocative sight of steam trains chugging along this heritage line is commonplace

This is a glorious loop linking the villages of Glaisdale and Egton Bridge that reveals some of the Esk Valley’s most delightful scenery. It’s a walk characterized by historic and sometimes romantic river crossings, ancient trods, bluebell woodlands and the peaceful sound of the Esk. The loop can be

This is a wonderful station to station hike through the delightful Esk Valley that forms the second part of the Esk Valley Walk long-distance trail. There’s variety aplenty, with beautiful woodland, pretty villages and panoramic heather moorland to explore.

This strenuous moorland loop takes you high onto the moorland to the source of the Esk at Westerdale Head and back to Castleton. It’s the first stage of the Esk Valley Walk long-distance trail, and is best saved for a long, clear summer day. The Lion Inn, one of the highest pubs in the country, offers

This is one of the classic hikes in the North York Moors – a superb loop that tackles Yorkshire’s answer to the Matterhorn, Roseberry Topping. After this, you’ll skirt the western escarpment of Great Ayton Moor and reach the summit of Easby Moor, where you’ll find a monument to navigator and explorer
