After rumbling across the wooden toll bridge over the River Mawddach, along the singletrack road, and carefully crossing the A496, you’re straight into a stinker of a climb past the pretty cottages of Taicynhaeaf.

The climb eases off slightly, rolling alongside the beautiful tumbling waters of a mountain

This is the shortest section of the Rebellion Way, but looping inland and then back to the seaside, it’s also the hilliest (in comparative Norfolk terms), and has more gravel than the previous stage.

It’s also packed with places you might want to stop and really appreciate. That starts with an optional

Stage 1 of the route begins in Wye, heading out of the town up a moderate climb then through the King’s Wood, which in late spring is awash with a carpet of bluebells. From there it descends to Chilham, before picking up a gravel towpath to Canterbury.

From there you join the delightfully named Crab

At nine miles long (14.5 km) and flat, this is a great cycle trail for the whole family. Taking you from the mountains to the beach, the Mawddach Trail begins in historic Dolgellau and follows one of the UK’s many former railway trackbeds. As you leave the town, you can catch a few glimpses of the river
