Southwest of Birkenfeld lies the Bostalsee, which alone is worth a visit if you go on holiday in the Birkenfelder Land. It is all the more worthwhile to explore the lake and its surroundings by bicycle. As a reward, you can then relax in the lido or take a ride on a pedal boat over the water.Let's go on the west bank of the lake, where you can easily park your car in a large parking lot. Through varied, undulating terrain you now cycle to the Nahe spring - here, by the way, the Nahe cycle path begins. You come through cozy villages such as Neunkirchen, Selbach or Theley and past inviting Refreshments, such as the idyllic Hofgut Imsbach. In Theley you can, if you like, make a stop at the Schaumberg theme park, especially a highlight when traveling with children. Then you turn off onto the wonderful to Wendelinusradweg, which brings you over an old railway track wonderfully quiet and secluded back to Bostalsee.By the way, the Bostalsee is also a nice "base camp" for further cycling tours. From the rustic campsite to the fully equipped Centerparc you will find all kinds of accommodation.

    1. Birkenfelder Land

The Birkenfelder Land is part of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park with its unique landscape, the habitat of numerous rare animal and plant species. What could be more natural than to discover this beautiful habitat silently and emission-free by bicycle? Here you drive through mysterious hillside moors, through vast forests with ancient trees and only rarely do other people cycle or cross paths with you here. Nature and tranquility awaits you on this beautiful tour through the national park with a stopover at the Nonnweiler reservoir.Start of the tour is in bridges - from here it goes first a while uphill, into the shady forests of the beautiful national park. The small, historic Forsthaus Neuhof is a good reason for a short break - here you can get a nice impression of how the forestry workers once lived here. Pedaled a few more times and there is a beautiful passage that leads you mainly downhill to the Nonnweiler reservoir. The circumnavigation of the lake is pure pleasure. The route here is flat, you cycle slightly above the lakeshore and have always great views of the dark blue water surface of the largest reservoir of the Saarland. If you feel like it, you can always stop at the stations of the Planetenradwegs, which leads around the lake. Text and image panels as well as true-to-scale planetary models provide a lot of information here.On the way back you cycle again through the shady forest. Over the old Erzweg you come directly into the small town of Abentheuer, where the old ironworks is an exciting and informative highlight of the tour. Then you can roll out about 1.5 kilometers to the starting point of the tour.

Once Birkenfelder Land was an important center of the iron industry. Today, you can guess the old Abentheurer ironworks, which you pass on this 26 kilometer long cycle loop.Start of the tour is in Birkenfeld. Past the idyllic fishing pond you cycle to Abentheuer, so a stop at the ironworks is really worthwhile. After you have informed everything about the history of the oldest blast furnace in Hünsrück and about the production of cast iron, you drive along the southern edge of the National Park Hunsrück-Hochwald until you enjoy from a distance a magnificent view of the small town Rinzenberg with its pretty old farmhouses ,Shortly thereafter, it becomes really idyllic: At the Sauerbrunnen at Oberhambach worth a break with a short walk to Petersquelle. Here was once a spa, the guests drank the ferrous water of the sour well, which was also sent as healing water in the world. A sip can not hurt, then it rides much fresher.Through the picturesque valley of Hambach, the route leads you via Elchweiler on to Schmißberg. It's worth taking a break at the Sirona Pavilion, just a few hundred meters behind Schmißberg. From here it goes past the reconstructed Roman road back to Birkenfeld. The history of the iron industry from Celtic times to the industrial age is told in the Landesmuseum - if you have time after the tour, a visit to the museum is worthwhile!

Thanks to the best rail connection to Kronweiler, you can drive relaxed and without a car to the starting point of this approximately 50-kilometer round. If you like, you can tune into the beautiful scenery that awaits you right at the beginning of the tour. A short detour to the Naheufer with its impressive rock walls left and right is worthwhile. Then it starts right. Between fields and forest you cycle over Oberbrombach to Leisel. The Roman tomb "Kipp", the Götterallee and the church Heiligenbösch are right on the route and tell the story of the region - silent highlights that invite you to rest and inform you at the same time. From the Sprudeldorf Schwollen you will continue to Hattgenstein, where the lookout tower gives you a wonderful view of the country. Small trips to the Sauerbrunnen and the Petersquelle in Oberhambach are definitely worth it, because the water that splashes out of the ground here should be very healthy. Embark on a round of nature enjoyment with rail connections: the starting point of this approximately 30-kilometer round is directly at the Neubrücke (Nahe) train station, which can be reached quickly and easily from the Rhein-Main area or from Saarbrücken. So you can relax on a beautiful tour to the edge of the National Park Hunsrück-Hochwald and along the Traunbach back in Nahetal.Let's go over a piece of the bike path to Birkenfeld. There is a stop in the recreation area Fischwaid worthwhile, right on the nature reserve Tongruben - why this route is called "water dreams" is demonstrated here impressively for the first time, because here it is just fantastically beautiful. In the idyllic fishponds there is the possibility to stop at the Anglerheim. If your e-bike needs a bit more power, the Café Treibhaus offers the perfect break location, because there is a charging station here.Further on, the path leads you across the fields to Bruecken, where again a nice rest stop at a pond awaits you. In spring, this spot impresses with its numerous wild daffodils, which color the shores of the Traunbach in a golden yellow color. From here we continue to Abentheuer with its historic ironworks and finally over the old Erzweg along the edge of the National Park along towards the Saarland border. If you still feel like it, you can extend the tour over Sötern to Bostalsee and drive back on the Naheradweg. However, our route leads you directly through the Trauntal downhill to Hoppstädten-Weiersbach.The route is well marked so that you can stay on the right track without looking at your smartphone.
