I would recommend the route back (beautiful countryside/some quiet lanes/roads) but would advise a more scenic route through the villages going out, as opposed to the busier/less scenic A roads/B roads.

We completed this on town bikes, rough path over bridge into Coton, road through Madingley rough road surface. Came back via/towards Rampton and took off road route back onto guided busway. Lovely cafe for brunch/lunch/coffee.

A hilly cycle! But very picturesque, mostly quiet roads. Note: Carry straight on past Duddenhoe End (signposted).
