Cerro López
One of the most scenic day hikes in Patagonia. Stunning panoramic views make this a highlight, but it's strenuous and challenging – suitable for experienced hikers only. Difficulty & Essentials Length/Duration: One-way ascent/descent route (do NOT reverse). Allow full day. Difficulty: Hard – includes rock scrambling at the start (rock experience required). Weather: Good, stable conditions only. Check forecast! Water: None available. Pack at least 2L per person. You can refill before Refugio López. Registration: Free mandatory check-in: barilochetrekking.com/sendero-113 Route Overview Ascent: Multiple cairn-marked paths (cairns everywhere). Choose the easiest, but use GPS + terrain judgment – don't rely on GPS alone. Reach first sub-peak, slight descent on far side. Final climb to ridge, then Cerro López summit. Descent: Over-marked with arrows/dots. Don't underestimate time to Refugio López – scrambling downhill slows you down. Final road section: easy & quick. Cell Signal: Good on descent; none at road (no UBER, taxi, etc.). Walk 15 min to Bahía López for signal or other direction towards Patagonia Brewery for a well-deserved beer! Perfect for fit hikers seeking big rewards, but respect the challenge.
