Nestled in the Western Ghats near Coimbatore, Velliangiri is affectionately known as the Kailash of the South. It’s a 7-hill staircase leading to a Shiva temple perched around 6,000 feet above sea level. The trail appears deceptively simple, with a 6 km one-way distance. However, it feels like a gruelling 12–14 km of relentless stone steps, steep rocky sections, bamboo-covered paths, and slippery stretches like Vazhukku Paarai. The journey begins at the Poondi temple, shrouded in the cool embrace of the night. As you traverse the seven distinct hills, you’ll encounter water points like Kaithatti Sunai, Pambaati Sunai, and Aandi Sunai. The city lights gradually fade beneath a sea of clouds, creating a serene atmosphere. By the time you reach the white-sand slopes of the 5th and 6th hills, your quads are burning, your lungs are working overtime, and your ego is completely subdued. The final steep push to the Shiva shrine on the 7th hill tests your limits. What sets Velliangiri apart is the unique blend of hardcore trekkers and barefoot devotees. They all share the same rugged path, united by their shared goal of reaching the summit before the heat sets in and the forest closes for the day. Open roughly from February to May each year, the trek is officially rated moderate to difficult. It’s a challenge that can be completed in 8–14 hours up and down if you’re reasonably fit. However, it’s brutally unforgiving if you underestimate the effort required. Come for the challenge, but stay for the tranquility at the summit. There’s no phone signal, only the soothing sounds of the wind, clouds, and the swayambhu Shiva linga. It’s a feeling of being embraced by the mountain, not the other way around.
