South Alps Challenge 2025: Conquering the Remaining Giants After summiting our first peak last year, this year’s goal was to tackle the other major mountains in the South Alps range. Day 1: We took a bus from Narada Parking to Hirogawara, where our climb began. The weather was harsh—cold temperatures around 7°C, heavy rain, and fierce winds with gusts reaching up to 30 m/s. Despite the conditions, we ascended Japan’s second-highest peak, Mt. Kita (3,193m), and spent the night at the Mt. Kita hut. Though we covered only 9.5 km, the elevation gain of nearly 1,800m in such extreme weather made it a grueling experience. Day 2: We set off at 4 a.m. under strong winds, but thankfully the rain had stopped. After reaching Mt. Aino, the weather turned—sunlight broke through, the wind died down, and we were treated to a stunning sunrise with clouds and patches of blue sky. We continued past Mt. Nakashirane (3,055 m), Mt. Aino (3,190 m), Mt. Nishinotori (3,051 m), and Mt. Notori (3,028 m), then descended all the way back to Narada Parking via the Daichi Powerplant. It was a long and demanding day, covering roughly 22 km, including treacherous downhill sections and river crossings.
