Dolomite Gravel Day 3
Day 3: Rifugio Prato Piazza to Bolzano Waking up in the mist shrouded Dolomites was a magical way to start the morning with peaks swirling in and out of view. Descending down towards Cortina d'Ampezzo, we split up with the idea to meet sometime later in the day. Climbing back into the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Dolomiti d'Ampezzo was a grind up steep gradients, but still rideable with low enough gearing. Cresting the top, the decent from Rifugio Fanes to Albergo Pederü was the most stunning of the trip with a wicked fast road winding down through granite peaks. Switching river valleys, the gravel road was blocked by a calve being birthed. A short hike a bike around and I cruising back up towards La Villa Stern. Arriving at Rifugio Piz Sorega, I could see half of the famous Sellaronda laid out before me. Starting up the Gardena Pass, I realized that the roads were closed to just cyclist because it was the Sellaronda Bike Day! Tens of thousands of other cyclists were out enjoying the roads, without a car in sight. We closed the trip with a gravel route across the iconic Seiser Alm, grabbed a few engagement shots then made the 6,000 foot decent back into Bolzano.

Dolomite Gravel Day 2
Day 2: Sand in Taufers to Rifugio Prato Piazza Climbing into the Parco Naturale Vedrette di Ries felt like entering a different world. As the Reintalstrasse turned into a gravel road, our only company quickly became cows cheering us on with their bells. Crossing the pass into Austria, we were greeted by a hive of agricultural activity with farmers moving their animals up and down the valley. Climbing back up the Defereggental-Landstrasse, we entered back into civilization with cars and motorcycles wanting to drive the one way switchbacking road into Italy. Most of the detours off the road could have been avoided if we had known better. Running out of daylight in our bid for Cortina, we decided to stop at Rifugio Prato Piazza where a warm meal and bed awaited us.

Dolomite Gravel Day 1
Day 1: Merano to Sand in Taufers Wanting to head towards the Parco Naturale Vedrette di Ries from Merano, we needed to head towards Bruneck which meant either down to Bolzano or over Jaufenpass. Having had enough of the valley, we decided for Jaufenpass. The bike path along the Passer was a relaxed start with e-bikes and fruit trees all around. From St. Leonhard, we took a side road to avoid the main Jaufenstrasse for half the climb. Once over the pass and back down, it was basically all bike paths the rest of the way following the river down and up and looking out for the castles that dotted the hillsides.
