Chasing the Hills of Athens – The Best View Challenge

Discover Athens from above — one hill, one story, one breathtaking view at a time. Chasing the Hills – The Best View Challenge is a 12-kilometer walking adventure that weaves together the city’s history, nature, and vibrant street life, with perfect moments to rest, refuel, and enjoy authentic Athenian flavors along the way. The journey begins at the Pnyx, the birthplace of democracy, before crossing the Nymphs Hill and Filopappou Hill, where pine trees and marble paths frame stunning views of the Acropolis and the sea. From these quiet heights, the city unfolds below — a timeless blend of ruins, rooftops, and rhythm. Descending toward the Temple of Zeus, the route passes the elegant Zappeion and enters the National Garden, a green refuge filled with statues, fountains, and shaded benches. It’s the ideal spot to pause for a refreshing drink or light lunch before continuing. The trail then winds through the graceful Kolonaki district, where cafés and terraces offer refined local dishes and relaxed charm — a perfect midday break before tackling the steep ascent of Lycabettus Hill, the highest point in Athens. From its white chapel at the top, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic 360° view stretching from the Acropolis to the Aegean. After descending, the path leads into lively Exarchia, the city’s creative heart, full of street art, energy, and hidden coffee corners. Continue through the colorful flea market and Monastiraki, where the scents of herbs, leather, and grilled food fill the air and the pulse of modern Athens comes alive. The journey ends on Areopagus Hill, where locals and travelers gather at dusk to watch the sun dip behind the Parthenon. As the city lights begin to glow, it’s the perfect finale to a day of climbing, exploring, and connecting with Athens from every angle. Three hills, twelve kilometers, countless views — Chasing the Hills isn’t just a walk. It’s the ultimate Athens experience: a challenge for the legs, a feast for the eyes, and a love letter to the city of gods.
