For our guests staying at Grøtådalsetra, this route is the most efficient way to reach the seter. It also makes for a beautiful hike if you want to visit Grøtådalen and the inner parts of Femundsmarka. From Haugen, the trail climbs steadily, gaining about 210 meters of elevation over the first four kilometers as you ascend Femundlia and pass the sandy ridges before the terrain levels out beneath Falkfangerhøgda. From there, the trail continues through flat, rocky terrain until you reach Oasen – a small gem that makes the hike worthwhile in itself. It’s a welcome break from the boulder fields and the first opportunity to refill your water bottle. Beyond Oasen, the terrain becomes more varied as you continue toward Heimveitjønna and Grøtåa, where it might be worth casting a fishing line or two. The final stretch to Grøtådalsetra crosses flat marshes, with the trail following the river all the way to the seter.

The Røa river system starts at Lake Rogen, which lies on the border between Norway and Sweden. From there, the river flows through rapids and calm pools before reaching the lakes Øvre Roasten and Nedre Roasten. This hiking guide is primarily intended for guests staying at Roasthytta, which belongs to Haugen Gård. However, it is also relevant for those arriving on the ferry Fæmund II at Haugen and wishing to explore the Røa river system. The hike begins with a steady ascent of about 120 meters over the first three kilometers, until you cross the treeline and get a beautiful view of the Røvoltjønnan ponds. From there, the trail winds between small tarns and wetlands before descending toward Roastlia. Here, turn right off the red-marked DNT trail towards Nedre Roasten as you pass the treeline. The vegetation becomes denser and more lush, and you’ll get the chance to admire old, weather-beaten pines shaped by the often harsh conditions of the area.

From there, the hike continues through flat, rocky terrain until you reach Oasen. Oasen is nothing more than a small pond surrounded by birch trees, yet it is one of the most photogenic spots in Femundsmarka. Its name is no coincidence – this really is an oasis in the boulder field at the foot of the mountain Store Svuku. Oasen is also the first place where you can refill your water bottle, so it’s a good idea to bring enough water from Haugen.

This hike rewards you with wide-open views from the top of Kuvola. The hike starts in light pine forest, following the marked trail to Kuvolsetra. In the past, livestock was brought here for summer grazing, and the seter was an important part of the Femundshytta’s seasonal operations. From Kuvolsetra there is no clear trail to the summit, so you need to navigate on your own. Either set a compass course about 30° northeast or follow the marked trail a few hundred meters towards Svukuriset until the treeline opens up to the east. Once above the treeline, Kuvola becomes easy to spot – just a few hundred meters to the north. At the top, you are rewarded with fantastic views of Lake Femund, Flenskampan, Elgåhogna, and Store Svuku. Reindeer are often seen in the area.

Kuneset is a small, picturesque headland that stretches about 300 meters into Lake Femund, just south of Haugen farm. The walk there is easy and perfect for a short afternoon trip or a calm morning stroll. The trail follows the shoreline through gentle terrain, crossing several small streams along the way. These streams come from natural springs higher up the hillside and run underground from the mountain – the water is crystal clear and perfect for drinking. They are usually easy to cross, though after heavy rain they may require a bit more care. The leeward side is often calm, even on windy days, making it a great spot for fishing from the shore. Kuneset is also a beautiful place to take photos, enjoy a packed lunch or a cup of coffee, and simply let time slow down while taking in the scenery.

From Haugen, follow the easy trail north along Lake Femund. After about one kilometer, turn left when you see the sandy beach through the trees. Sandstranda, located between Haugen and Storvika, feels like a small hidden Riviera in the middle of the wilderness – with soft sand and beautiful views over the lake. The water can be a bit chilly, but on a warm summer day it’s perfect for a refreshing swim. This short and easy walk is ideal for families. The beach is especially peaceful and sheltered when the wind comes from the south.
