We start from Madonna (1,522 m) with a western and southern traverse of Monte Spinale; this ideal introductory hike leads us along a forested slope on the so‑called Bear Trail, Sentiero dell’Orso, which takes us to the hut in the Vallesinella valley. From there we head east towards the majestic Cascate Alte di Vallesinella, said to be the most frequently photographed waterfalls in Trentino, no doubt thanks to how easily accessible they are – although it must be said they certainly do not lack charm. From this point the real ascent begins: at first we climb steeply up a rock face where the water dances down merrily, but reaching the top does not take much effort because the path is well equipped with stairs, walkways and bridges. Then, after a short stretch through the forest, we emerge onto the meadow by the Malga Vallesinella di Sopra shepherd’s hut. Now comes a short break before a longer ascent, but the route is very pleasant, mostly wrapped in the shelter of the forest. At this time of day the sun (if it appears) will already be behind our backs, low in the western sky, and it stays that way all the way to the Graffer al Grostè hut (2,261 m)
