My son, Stu, and I share many memories of fishing along this stretch of Trout Run in Decorah, Iowa. Its currents, like those of so many other streams throughout the Driftless Region, are woven into the fabric of our lives. This evening, as we arrived and got ready to fish, I realized I had left all my fishing gear—rods, reels, boots, waders, flies, and vest—back home in Minneapolis! With all the other hobbies I had to pack for—biking, birding, hiking, mapping, and photographing—I'm surprised I only forgot the gear for one of them. To my surprise, it didn’t matter. Much like the father in “A River Runs Through It,” I stood quietly on the bank as dusk settled, perfectly content to watch my son send graceful loops across the water. With the finesse of a magician, he enticed a hefty brown trout from the stream using a foam beetle fly he had tied himself. That moment became another thread weaving us into the life of this stream. I just realized, as I plotted our cumulative distance on our virtual hike along the South Coast Path of England, that we have arrived virtually in the village of Polperro! Martha and I visited Polperro in July 1978 on my mother's specific recommendation, who had visited it previously. This was pre-GPS, so I don't have a record of our path along the seaside cliff edge. but I do have my checklist of birds seen on that walk: European Herring Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Great Cormorant, and European Greenfinch. Today's walk has truly tied together many strands of my life over nearly 50 years. Fishing this pool of the Middle Branch of the Whitewater River in Whitewater River State Park on the first day of the year has been a family tradition for the last 30 years. Now, my son helps me in and out of the water like I had my father in the past. I hope the tradition continues. We are so blessed
