Derek

Hello and welcome! I’m a former physics and ICT teacher, originally from the UK. I traded equations for adventure back in 2002. My journey started in the beautiful Seychelles and then took me to Hong Kong, where I eventually retired in 2016. Now, I’ve found a new home in the vibrant metropolis of Bangkok.

This is a strenuous very steep climb up about 1200 steps. You need to be mobile and reasonably fit. It’s worth it though.

A pleasant level walk of about 2 km each way, first alongside the river, and then on a concrete walkway through the mangrove forest.

This is an amazing heritage treasure. Located on Mission Hill in Sham Shui Po, the Ex-Sham Shui Po Service Reservoir was rediscovered in 2020 after being decommissioned for decades. Featuring European-style granite piers and red brick arches imitating Roman civil engineering works, the structure offers us a precious glimpse of Hong Kong’s water supply history over the past 100 years. The Ex-Sham Shui Po Service Reservoir was confirmed as a Grade 1 historic structure by the Antiquities Advisory Board in 2021

Explore the historic Thonburi district with this Talat Phlu food market walk. Discover an area defined by its 18th-century heritage and preserved street food culture. Unlike the modern commercial centers of Bangkok, Talat Phlu retains the atmosphere of the former capital established by King Taksin after the fall of Ayutthaya. Explore more at lens-wanderings.com

If you are looking for one of the most rewarding and visually stunning challenges in Bangkok photography, look no further than the magnificent Rama VIII Bridge. This bridge is more than just a transportation link; instead, it is a piece of modern architecture perfectly positioned against the historic backdrop of Rattanakosin Island on the east side of the Chao Phraya River. This is your essential guide to a 4 km photo walk around and over the bridge, which hits every key photography viewpoint for both day and, crucially, night-time magic. The Rama VIII Bridge was constructed between 1999 and 2002. This project was initiated as a royal project to alleviate traffic congestion on the nearby Phra Pinklao Bridge. Named in honour of the late King Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII), the bridge features a striking asymmetrical cable-stayed design. A single, inverted Y-shaped pylon stands 160 meters tall on the Thonburi side. At the time of its completion, it was one of the world's largest asymmetrical bridges of its kind.
