The Sunday Cyclist

I’ve been riding Sundays for more than 35 years. The only thing that’s changed is the scenery. 🌏🚴

I’m a Canadian 🇨🇦 based in Bermuda 🇧🇲, slow travelling the world one month at a time — with my bike along for every stop.

I ride a custom titanium touring bike built with S&S couplers and a Pinion gearbox, making it compact, reliable, and ready to travel almost anywhere.

Back in 1989–90, I cycled around the world in the traditional sense. These days, the pace is slower, the stays are longer, and the rides are less about distance and more about discovery.

Through Komoot, I’ll be sharing my weekly Sunday rides, the occasional short cycling tour, and the places I get to know from the saddle.

Different country. Same Sunday tradition.

🇯🇵 Day 4: Jōzankei to Sapporo — The Home Stretch…

What a way to end the tour! 😊🚴 After a fabulous stay at the Shogetsu Grand Hotel in Jōzankei, I had a beautiful 30 km scenic ride, gradually descending about 250 m as I followed the Toyohira River into Sapporo. 🥰

This was my second ryokan experience of the trip.…

🇯🇵 Day 3: Lake Toya to Jōzenkei Onsen - Snow Sheds, Tunnels & Hot Springs 🌨️🚴♨️

The day started with a beautiful and quiet 15 km ride along the shoreline of Lake Toya. 🥰🌋

Most mountain passes will follow a river valley almost to the top, and today was no different. I had a gradual 20 km climb before reaching the summit at about 830 m,…

🇯🇵Day 2: Lake Shitkotsu to Lake Toya - Headwinds, Mountain Passes & Two Beautiful Lakes 🚴‍♂️

Even though I battled a tough headwind💨 all day, the beauty of the ride more than made up for it. After a 17 km climb to Bifue Pass (610 m), the remaining 50 km was mostly a gentle downhill—which is every cyclist’s dream.🥰

The highlights of the ride were cycling…

🇯🇵Day 1: Hidden Bike Paths & Crater Lakes: Sapporo to Lake Shikotsu

Out of today's 75 km, a whopping 40 km were spent on dedicated bike paths. Touring doesn’t get much better than that!🥰

When planning this five-day Hokkaido loop, I didn't fully realize how much of the route cuts straight through Shikotsu-Tōya National Park. It’s shaping up to be an incredible…

🇯🇵Riding Through Sapporo to the Fighters’ New Ballpark ⚾️🚴

Today’s ride was shorter than usual at 48 km, but it was especially enjoyable. Most of the route followed a new, beautifully developed bike trail leading out to ES CON FIELD, the new home of Sapporo’s professional baseball team, the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. ⚾️

This is the team that Shohei…

🇯🇵Sapporo - Following the Toyohira River to the Coast

Today’s ride was nice, if a little uneventful. I followed the Toyohira River out of town toward the coast. Fortunately, I tackled the longer, more exposed section first, as the winds were blowing hard from the southeast. 💨

The ride back was into a strong headwind, but most of it…

🇯🇵 • 🚲 A Quiet Ride Through Sapporo to the Sea

Every so often I have a “magical” 🪄 ride. 🚲 Today was one of them.

Ironically, the ride itself was relatively uneventful, aside from my visit to Otaru, a touristy port city about 40 km from Sapporo. Otaru was once Sapporo’s main port, and many of its old warehouses and…

🇯🇵Fresh Tomatoes, Warm Hospitality & Shohei Ohtani: A Welcome to Japanese Cycling! 🚴‍♂️🍅⚾️

I couldn’t have asked for a more pleasant introduction to Japanese cycling! 😊🇯🇵🚴‍♂️

While nothing opened until around 9:30 AM, the fantastic weather, lush greenery, and light traffic made for a wonderful ride. The only real drawback was that the trails weren’t in the best shape, which made up the…

🇨🇳Songhua River, Harbin: Today turned into a great lesson in going with your gut! 🚴‍♂️

My original plan was a ride out to Volga Manor, the Russian-themed resort outside the city. But as I headed southwest, I spotted a raised berm road hugging the Songhua River—built for flood protection—and decided to pivot on the fly.

It turned out to be a fantastic call. Instead of…

🇨🇳 Riverside Cycling & Sobering History: Discovering Harbin's Unit 731

Today’s main destination was the Museum of Evidence of War Crimes by Japanese Army Unit 731, on the outskirts of Harbin. I’ve visited museums about war crimes and genocide in several countries, yet I knew nothing about this atrocity until arriving here.

Most of today’s ride followed a pleasant cycle…

🇨🇳Harbin: In search of a decent secondary road…😡

Well, China 🇨🇳 may have some of the world’s most impressive infrastructure, but that certainly doesn’t extend to many of its secondary roads… 😡

Once I left Harbin, I had to change my planned route several times in search of roads that were actually rideable. At least cycling through Harbin…

🇰🇷Seowon Station to Olympic Park Loop

Today was my last Sunday ride in Seoul. There was one final stretch of the Han River I wanted to explore, and it was also a good excuse to visit the Jamsil neighbourhood — home to Lotte World Tower and the Olympic Stadium. As one of Seoul’s newer neighborhoods, I…

🇰🇷South Korean Tour (4 Rivers Bike Route) - Day 3 - Chungju to Mungyeong

🇰🇷South Korea Tour (4 Rivers Bike Route) - Day 2 - Yangpyeong to Chungju

Day 2 was longer and more challenging, especially with no recovery day after yesterday’s ride. As I moved farther from Seoul, the number of cyclists on the trail noticeably thinned out, giving the ride a quieter and more remote feel. Despite the increasing distance from the capital, the cycling infrastructure…
