Today we followed part of the Nakasendō, one of the five historic routes of the Edo period, connecting Edo (today’s Tokyo) with Kyoto. The Nakasendō crossed Japan through the mountains, linking small post towns where travelers used to rest along the way.

I was honestly scared before climbing Usui Pass. It looked overwhelming, and the idea of climbing and climbing and climbing felt like a lot. Some parts were definitely challenging, both physically and mentally, but nothing we couldn’t handle.

Day 1: From Tokyo to Kumagaya
