Bike About Town - Newcastle

I’m Pip, and I run Bike About Town - Newcastle. It’s a community group on Meetup. I put on free weekly guided cycle rides showcasing quiet cycle-friendly routes around Newcastle, NSW. These are slow, relaxed rides suitable for most skill levels and fitness levels.

I started the group with the aim of giving people the skills and knowledge to be able to cycle for some of their daily or weekly short trips.

Come along to enjoy the outdoors, build cycling confidence, learn effective safe cycling principles, discover pleasant quiet routes, and meet others.

Cycling is a great way to get from A to B in inner Newcastle, particularly for short everyday trips to the beach, work, school or shops.

Inner Newcastle has several features that happen to make it quite good for cycling for transport. It is predominantly flat. And the streets are set out mostly like a grid of short blocks, which means you have many route options that are direct and that avoid main roads. Another advantage of the short blocks is that drivers can’t pick up much speed, and so lots of the streets effectively become more like low-speed (40km/hr) streets. Due to the grid and also the geography, many streets have a low (motorist) traffic volume.

Add a quick, enjoyable, low-cost, low-polluting, active transport option to your repertoire!

I started recording routes on Komoot so that others can find their way around Inner Newcastle by bike.

These routes avoid high-speed, high-pressure roads. Rather, I use shared paths and I zig-zag through low-pressure streets.

Whilst the routes may not always appear to be direct, they are often, in avoiding main roads, still quick because the quieter streets usually have fewer traffic lights.

I look forward to recording more routes that people can use to get to school, work, shops, beach etc.

Any questions about the routes, please leave a comment.

Cheers,
Pip

Lambton Park to Carrington Farmers Market: Flat, 85% shared paths - 7km one-way, 25-45 minutes one-way

A great, direct route from Lambton to Carrington. 1. Follows the R5 Cycle Route to the Newcastle Showground in Hamilton North, all on shared paths. 2. Then a few blocks of quiet streets of Hamilton North. 3. Next is a 400 metre section of Clyde St, a high-speed high-traffic road. I highly recommend the footpath, unless you are experienced. The road has a pinch point at the railway crossing, a blind high-speed bend, and parked cars to navigate. Clyde St is the missing gap in an otherwise safe cycle route, linking Jesmond to Nobbys Beach. 4. Join the separated cycleway on Chinchen St, then left onto the Hubbard St shared path. 5. At Islington Park, the Throsby Creek shared path begins. This is a great route to get to the 7km Throsby Creek shared path that follows the foreshore all the way to Newcastle Beach. The R4 Mayfield to Kotara Cycle Route intersects this route at Hunter Stadium at the Turton Rd shared path. Turn left on the shared path to get to Waratah/Mayfield/Callaghan University. Turn right to get to Kotara Westfield or the Fernleigh Track that starts at Adamstown Station.
