The hike went uphill immediately from the Alto de Pozo campsite to the pico de las Nieves, then it was downhill to the Refugio, which was closed. After that it was an undulating and interesting trail, crossing the road at Llanos de la pez, where the area recreativa was also temporarily closed. The trail then led up to the Roque Nublo mirador, lava flows under foot, before the return back to the campsite. This trail could for the most part be run also.

Mostly uphill road and trail, couldn’t run all of it, but pretty safe to run downhill today. I chose to get to the road, turn around and come down a slightly different way.

The hiking trail was clearly marked and quite a gentle gradient for the first hour or so, then things got serious as we also had to negotiate the compacted snow and later on ice that covered much of the trail. Crampons and trekking poles were a must towards the Viejo crater and Pico, and definitely so between there and the top of Teide. Much of the latter part of the hike we had to use our hands to hold on to the rock to avoid the ice.

The trail shown on Komoot didn't match the actual official PR TF- 65 route. Nonetheless, the hike was challenging at speed, with so many great vistas. It didn't skirt Los Gigantes but came down from the Montana Guama back to Puerto de Santiago. Beware of vandalised signage that did not show where the PR TF-65 route went on two occasions. Suggest using the app to keep you on the trail.
