Last day of the 6 day tour and after yesterday's short day the legs felt all good and recovered ready to tackle the last climbs. After a quick breakfast first stop was the ruins of Gortyn, the city that toppled destroyed Phaistos. The area was settled in early Minoan times, but most of the ruins date from Roman times. Behind the odeon the oldest known Greek law code is engraved in the wall. Gortyn is also the place where Zeus and Europa had an affair after he abducted her from the Levant. King Minos was one of 3 children born from this. After this I wanted to visit the roman graves near Ag. Thomas, but I somehow missed the correct turn and only realised it after making a full descent

A short ride to Matala, the last stop of my exploration loop through Crete, before returning to Heraklion tomorrow. On the road visiting the ancient Minoan villa at Agia Triada and the Minoan Palaca at Phaistos. Both of which are mostly from around 1900 BC, build upon even older foundations up to 3000 BC.

750 meter into the ride it was time for the first climb of the day to wake up the legs after yesterday's effort. Luckily this was followed by a nice winding gravel path between the olive trees. Then came the climb up Kourtaliotikos gorge. Beautiful landscape, but I must admit I was very happy when I arrived at the top ⛰️ 😓

Today was gonna be the most demanding ride of the tour, with a lot of elevation, partly in the remote offroad section of the Manika Plateau. I started the day early to leave enough time for breaks when needed. After a quick breakfast in Rethymno it didnt take long for the first climb of the day to show up, part of which was a quiet road alongside a small stream and plenty of tree coverage, making it a nice and cool climb. From this side, by far the longest section of the climb is paved, with some nice switchbacks towards the top. (make sure to bring some cash, as in several villages there's no reception and thus no card payments for any resupplies). The landscape on the plateau is an amazing change of scenery and it feels really remote. The descent is very steep in places. Personally i would not advise taking on the climb from this side (def. not with a loaded bike). After a long decent, I directly ended up at a small secluded beach. A perfect spot to recover and maybe take a small dip to freshen up. However, it started dripping with rain, so I decided to quickly continue and finish the last 20km.
