Goleta to Buellton
Valley-side of Refugio Road is a little bumpy on 28mm tires but it works!

Lake Cachuma
My goal was to reach Lake Cachuma while avoiding dangerous traffic. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem possible. You can avoid the 154 until the end of Stagecoach Road, but then there's about 3 miles where you can't avoid the highway. The shoulder is often non-existant, cars are whizzing by at 45mph, and the side of the road is overgrown with bushes that you'll have to swerve into the road to avoid. Old San Marcos Road to Painter Cave is a beautiful and very challenging climb, however, and I would certainly repeat the climbing portion of this route if I wanted a workout with beautiful views. You can also get to Cold Springs Tavern safely by continuing along Stagecoach from where Painted Cave crosses the 154.

Highway 154 is a deathtrap, I would avoid at all costs.
