5 days around Mont Thabor
A five-day circuit through the wild mountains around Mont Thabor, starting and finishing in Névache. Around 75 km of high passes, turquoise mountain lakes, rocky valleys and almost 4,000 metres of climbing, with plenty of beautiful wild camping spots along the way. A demanding but spectacular trek through one of…

Cathedral Range Ridgeline Circuit
A spectacular 18.5 km circuit through the Cathedral Ranges, combining steep climbs, exposed scrambling and incredible ridge walking. Larapinta Trail day 11: Simpson Gap-AS Telegraph Station
The final section of the Larapinta Trail, from Simpsons Gap to Alice Springs Telegraph Station. Compared to earlier stages, this was a long but relatively easy walk, winding through open country on a mostly foot-friendly path.
At times, the trail runs close to the historic Australian Overland Telegraph Line. This…

Larapinta Trail day 10: Jay Creek-Simpsons Gap
A very long day on the Larapinta Trail, walking from Jay Creek to Simpsons Gap. Rocky tracks, dry creek beds and wide desert views made this section feel remote and peaceful, while the distance kept it challenging. Each step brings me one step closer to Alice Springs...

Larapinta Trail day 9: Standley Chasm -Jay Creek
From Standley Chasm to Jay Creek: a shorter but surprisingly tough section of the Larapinta Trail. Rocky paths, dry creek beds and classic red desert landscapes made this a beautiful and varied day of hiking through the West MacDonnell Ranges.
It’s still early in the afternoon when I reach Jay…

Larapinta Trail day 8: Birthday waterhole- Standley Chasm
From Birthday Waterhole to Standley Chasm: a challenging and beautiful section of the Larapinta Trail. Rocky climbs, exposed ridgelines and incredible views from Brinkley Bluff made this a tough day, but also one of the most rewarding parts of the trail.

Larapinta Trail day 7: Hugh Gorge Campsite-Birthday Waterhole
A tough but spectacular day through Hugh Gorge, up to Rocky Saddle and along Razorback Ridge. After the rain, the waterholes were full and the rocks slippery and a badly placed step into an ants’ nest made the final kilometres rather more memorable than planned.

Larapinta Trail day 6: Ellery Creek-Hugh Gorge
A long and very wet day through the desert after the first proper rain in months. We spent most of the stage completely soaked, had lunch sheltering in a drop toilet, and arrived at Hugh Gorge to discover that my sleeping bag had not survived the weather much better than…

Larapinta Trail day 5: Serpentine Dam -Ellery Creek
A long day through spinifex country, rocky ridges and ancient seabed landscapes, with wide views along the way. We reached Ellery Creek a day earlier than planned, opened our food drop and discovered we had packed far more pasta and muesli than any two people could reasonably eat.

Larapinta Trail day 1: Redbank Gorge to Mount Sonder
First day of an end-to-end hike of the Larapinta Trail in 11 days, following the route in reverse from Redbank Gorge to Alice Springs.
Starting at Redbank Gorge, we climbed Mount Sonder as the first stage of our Larapinta Trail hike. Instead of stopping at the official lookout, we scrambled…

Day 3 Kepler Track: Iris Burn Campsite - Rainbow Reach
A gentler final day on the Kepler Track, following the Iris Burn through beech forest and wetlands towards Lake Manapouri. After a quick swim at the beautiful beach near Moturau Hut, despite the relentless sandflies, the trail continues through forest back to Rainbow Reach. Tired legs and sore feet, but…

Day 2 Kepler Track: Brod Bay Campsite - Iris Burn Campsite
The big mountain day of the Kepler Track: 22.8 kilometres from Brod Bay to Iris Burn. After climbing through misty beech forest, the trail breaks above the treeline and follows the exposed ridges past Luxmore Hut and Mount Luxmore. Rain, strong winds and low clouds made the crossing atmospheric rather…
