Luisa and I left Briançon at the end of the afternoon with the aim of camping at Lake Orceyrette. After getting a little lost in the forest, we found the beautiful track that led to our destination. The fall colors were breathtaking. We arrived at nightfall and quickly set up camp because the temperatures were getting freezing. After a quick cold meal in the tent, we warmed up in our sleeping bags and chatted for a long time before falling asleep.

Today, the Strada dell’Assietta was on the program, a gravel paradise ! Then my best mate Stéphane joined me in Montgenèvre. After a good lunch break in Briançon, we tackled the gentle but long uphill to the Lautaret pass, which seemed endless with the head wind. We parted in Bourg d’Oisans where I stopped at my friends Grégory and Julien from Photo Nomades for a good raclette and sleep before the last ride home !

Last night, when I stopped to camp, I heard strange noises, as if someone was prowling in the forest. But every time I turned on my headlamp, I couldn't see anyone and couldn't tell if they were animals or humans. I must say that I am much less worried about animals. Even though most people are good, you never know who you run into and the news of a cyclist murdered in a place where I myself rode a lot and yet seemed calm, made me a little paranoid. As I wondered if it was better for me to leave, a herd of wild boars suddenly appeared from the forest. They watched me for a while and then ran away so I had a peaceful night's sleep at the end, if we omit the mattress which deflated. After crossing another long valley, I reached the Colle delle Finestre and
I was finally able to admire its magnificent curves, these being hidden in a cloud the last time I went there. I watched the sunset and then went down to camp. Just as I had finished dinner, a not-so-shy fox came over and stole a bag from me ! Luckily not the one with food so it dropped it further.

Before going up to the Col du Nivolet, I stopped to eat a croissant and drink a real hot chocolate in Degioz (why don't we make them like that in France, we are not supposed to be the country of gastronomy?) because I knew the climb was going to be long. I really liked the atmosphere in this little coffee shop which was very lively for a village that seemed dead. Once my breakfast was swallowed up, I rode to the end of the road and took the hiking trail to the pass. As expected, I had to carry the bike for several kilometers but it was more taxing than I expected with all the big stones in the way and the weight of the loaded bike. When I arrived on the plateau, it was a mixture of riding and pushing the bike on a mountain bike trail but which became more and more practicable, turned into a gravel road before ending on asphalt. There were switchbacks that suggested a superb descent and many lakes with different shades of colors at the top, it was sublime!

It was difficult to leave the comfort of my host family this morning, especially since I knew I had to go for the Grand Saint Bernard pass where I had several near-death experiences the time I climbed the side Swiss. Barely gone, I broke the clip of my saddle bag and the screen of my GPS went all black. At least it is still recording, because if it is not on Komoot, it didn't happen ! But it takes more than that to discourage me so I headed for Italy and miracle ! Apart from the descent to Aosta, I didn’t suffer from the cold today ! The road was also much quieter than on my last climb, which was very pleasant. I wanted to celebrate my arrival in Italy with a big pizza since I can finally have dinner without ending with debts but despite my late departure, I arrived too early and all the restaurants were still closed. What a disappointment ! I thought Italians were eating pizzas all day long. I then had to use my cooker that I carry since 750km and only used once 😅
