Swirl How – Grey Friar loop from Little Langdale

A great walk to tick off three wainwrights. The start and finish (being the same) are rocky and steep - but nothing too much. Once you reach the view of Swirl How, it looks intimidating, but the walk is relatively gentle onwards. The diversion to Grey Friars is worth the small effort. The views are exceptional.

The start of this walk is very steep up scree. Once you reach the point where you can branch off to Glennridding Dodd, it is a much nicer walk, with some mild scramble sections and short sections of exposure (both no issue). I would recommend the diversion to Heron Pike for the views over Ullswater. It is a bit boggy. We came up and back the same way, but I would recommend trying a different return if you are not a fan of slipping down steep scree (or maybe take you walking poles and don’t leave them in the car). Overall, great views and a nice walk.

Parking at Sadgill car park is limited, so get there early. The valley here is beautiful, and we walked for a long time along the wide track to reach Gatescarth and the turn towards Harter Fell. Depending on whether you prefer a long warm up or warm down, you may prefer to do this route in reverse. The views of the Far Eastern Fells are lovely throughout the walk. Once you gain enough elevation, Haweswater starts to come into view. The walk up to Harter Fell takes two hours from the car park, but it’s not very steep or challenging, and is generally quite pleasant. Once you reach Harter Fell the views out every direction are astounding. If you are lucky to have good visibility you will see Blackpool Tower, as well as the majority of the Lake District. Kentmere Pike and Shipman Knotts are pleasant enough, but not very interesting summits. Shipman Knotts is made more interesting by the loss of a distinguishable pathway, and a rocky descent. It’s not challenging though, so this should be enjoyed. The rest of the walk back to the car park is quite short from there. A lovely walk if you are looking for something not very long or technically challenging.

Great short wainwright to complete. Nothing technical or too challenging. Lots of solid steps on the route up, and quite boggy on the route down. Would maybe recommend this as a up and down route to avoid the bog. Great views of the surrounding fells, and the waterfalls are worth a visit on their own.
