Cycle to Tawanui Saddle
From Owaka cycle on back roads to Tawanui Saddle. Then back to Owaka round Catlins Lake and through bush to Pounawea. Lots of gravel road. Cycle anticlockwise to benefit from the prevailing westerly winds on the way home.

This ride has a significant component on a fast road with enough traffic to make it unpleasant. But it is the only way keep off the Bass Highway and get between these towns.

Done on a hired mountain bike (from Hobart Bike Hire) The climb up Mt Wellington is strenuous! But the views are amazing, as is the sense of achievement.

The route starts along the beach on a very quiet road and then passes several of the islands notable wineries and restaurants. The Bach is a great place for lunch but you have a steep hill to get there! After lunch you can coast home and relax on the beach and cool down with a swim.

This ride is nearly all off road on a cycleway except the last few kms into Penguin. The prevailing wind is westerly so look at the weather forecast to avoid a battle with it!
