Day 11: Into Hilton

First part gravel, then tarmac into Hilton - a gentle ending after an intense adventure.

Day 10: Towards Underberg

Nice gravel roads with beautiful views all the way. Due to more thunderstorms, we had to stop in between.

Accommodation:

Merinodale Farm (approx. R100 per person camping). Lovely owner, kitchen and bathroom available.

Day 9: Sani Pass into South Africa

Border crossing and descent down Sani Pass, a spectacular off-road pass into South Africa. The upper part is steep, rocky and unpaved (but incredible). Lower down it turns into smooth tarmac with stunning Drakensberg views.

Accommodation:

Day 8: Mokhotlong to Sani Flats

All tarmac and uphill to the highest part of the route (3,200 m!). Beautiful road, little traffic and stunning views. I didn’t expect much from this section but was very much surprised. Very fast and steep descent down to Sani Flats, a stunning high-altitude grassland shortly

Day 7: Semenanyane to Mokhotlong

Beautiful off-road riding until reaching tar. For several kilometers the road was fast, scenic and surrounded by nothing but hills. About 50 km before Mokhotlong, dam construction and development began, probably my least favorite part of the tour.

Day 6: Thaba-Tseka to Semenanyane

This off-road part was mostly rideable, with minor sections of pushing.

Accommodation:

We ended up sleeping at the health center in Semenanyane due to thunderstorms. If weather allows, the area is also great for wild camping.

Day 5: Senqunyane River towards Thaba-Tseka

The original route goes fully off-road to Thaba-Tseka. We halfway went to Mantsonyane and continued on the road instead, a very beautiful high-altitude pass road. You will find both options in this collection.

We initially planned two days for the section between

Day 4: Semonkong to Senqunyane River

Descending to the Senqunyane River involves a downhill push with very steep sections and large boulders. It was very draining and we got caught in a thunderstorm, so we slept at the river as we couldn't continue.

After crossing, you have to push your bike all the way

Day 3: Ramabanta to Semonkong

We removed Baboons Pass from the original route and instead took the road to Semonkong, absolutely the right decision for us. The pass would have meant many hours (20 km) of pushing. The road was perfect, hardly any traffic and surrounded only by nature.
