About Tom Sugden

I've been a keen mountain biker since the early nineties, having grown up in Bridge of Allan where there are miles of single-track in every direction. As a teenager, I raced cross-country across Scotland and after high school spent a year cycling around New Zealand. These days I ride mostly in the Scottish Borders with my eldest son during school holidays and make do with the tame trails of Essex during term time.

Windy Gyle

An excellent ride up Windy Gyle. The beginning and mid section of the climb is tough but if you're lucky you might have a tail wind. The upper section is easier on the old stone slabs. Some fun descents with bumps and jumps and small drop offs here and there. We took a bit of a detour early on to avoid a herd of cows and their calves.

Lupine, Gunsight and Lower Loop

Fairly easy loop from Crested Butte as warm up day before a bigger ride tomorrow. Lovely views over wetlands towards Mount Crested Butte, flowing sections through aspen woods, and a return route alongside slate river.

A nice loop from Saffron Walden to Nina's Coffee between Debden and Newport then back again. Mostly off-road with some of the more fun downhill sections in the area, such as the descent into Newport past the quarry and a very steep tunnel through the trees on the return route.
