Jerry Gore

Pretty much every year since 1977, I have been on climbing expeditions doing new routes around the world on big mountains. I love Big Walls - 1000 meter sheer rock walls - high altitude Himalayan peaks, and speed ascents on technical north faces. I loved really pushing myself to the limit. But then, in 2001, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I am not the type of person that retreats from challenges. So despite what my own family doctor told me, I never thought that I would not be able to continue my active lifestyle. But I did see my diagnosis as an opportunity. Together with my "tough as nails" wife Jackie, we moved our young family out to the Southern French Alps in 2003 and carved out a living in the Hautes Alpes where we still live to this day. These days I prefer to do adventure bikepacking trips to raise money for the charity I co-founded - Action4Diabetes. I gained my Green Beret as an Officer in The Royal Marines, despite an undiagnosed broken ankle on Night 1 of training, I have broken my neck twice, survived a direct lightning strike, been attacked by a Himalayan brown bear, been knocked unconscious by a rockfall on a remote peak in Russia and had friends die in front of me during violent storms in the Indian Himalaya. Yet, without doubt, the hardest thing I ever had to deal with is managing my diabetes condition. And that is why I have devoted my life to supporting impoverished children and young people with Type 1 Diabetes.
Every year since 2004 I have attempted a JIC (jerrygore.com/jerrys-insulin-challenges). JIC's are mountain, road bike and bikepacking challenges that I organise to raise money.
If you are interested in joining me on one of my JIC's please contact me via my website jerrygore.com Don't worry, I am not some incredible olympic champion, just an ordinary guy who loves to have fun in the outdoors and in doing so help others.
