We took the terrifying, coffin-shaped gondola lift up the Sassolungo and started the hike from impressive top station. The first third, the descent, can be slippery - we watched a dramatic helicopter rescue of a hiker who had slipped on the loose gravel. The scenery is incredible. This section finishes

This is an easy but very picturesque walk along the river Elbe. Starting from the Bleckede ferry you walk along the crest of the dyke which provides an elevated view over the river and marshlands to one side and the flat, open pastureland to the other.
