Headford to Ballinrobe (mostly) quiet road loop

Not gravel cycling as known in Britain but the “undesignated road” in Ireland is often great for cycling - fair surface usually very quiet, traffic when you meet it is respectful/friendly. On this loop I'd hoped to get views of both Lough Corrib and Lough Mask. While you can get…

Just including this for completeness. There are not bad cycle routes from the ferry port to the railway station (and thence city centre).

However, sadly typically of UK (and in fairness many other place) very poorly signposted and therefore very early to go in the wrong direction.

Easy and low-stress to cycle through the city.

from the station (near my Point A), one could just follow the Orne and take the Voie Verte (Greenway) all the way to Ouistreham.

This was longer, and a bit hillier than I'd been expecting.

However the climbing all came in the first 20K or so, and thereafter the very good quality Voie Verte de Suisse Normande (aka Le Francette?) was a very smooth, level run to Caen.

Caen itself is very much vast le detour, very easy to cycle round

The most challenging day of the short tour statistically but also among the most enjoyable.

There is a reasonably 'Big Climb' out of Le Cuve after an already hilly first 20K or so through lovely quiet lanes from Avranches.

Leading Le Cuve there is more or less continuous ascent for 6 - 7 K, but rarely

The main upside was they had reasonably priced emplacements on a nightly basis (some places have 2-night or even longer minimum stay).

Main downside is on a nasty D road, and

Went 'off-piste' after Pontivy, going more or less straight-line to Rohan. This is slower than the canal, even if shorter, due to the extra climbing. However if you enjoy quiet lanes more than canal tow-path, maybe it will be to your taste!

I went 'off piste' from EV1, initially due to some 'Route Barée' sections (black mark for the EV1 is the deviations were not signposted, though not hard to see the intended route on large-scale map or GPS). The first deviations brought me to the Plat du Jour place at Le Moustoir and thence by the quiet

Arriving early in Plymouth by train and with some hours before the ferry to Roscoff departed, I slightly modified the Tamar Bridge loop from another Komoot users. Crossing the Tamar on a spectacular road bridge brings you to another county (Cornwall) and with great views of IK Brunel's rail bridge to boot.

I did this on a bike one evening, but at 10K it is a bit short for a standalone bike ride. It could easily be part of a longer loop through the maze of tiny quiet roads between Lough Corrib and busier roads like the N84 which goes North from Galway towards Mayo.

Or it would make a pleasant walk or jogging
