Route can be made longer/harder in a variety of ways.
Looping up over into Teesdale at the top of Weardale at St. John's Chapel and back over at Newbiggin adds another long climb out and back.
For some more brutal short/steep sections turning left in Westgate and up past the old mines will take you back

Some of my favourite riding around here.
Beautiful scenery, attractive villages and historical local industry, mix of some sharp climbs and longer ascents, moorland and hills. Very occasional flat early on around Blanchland and Edmundbuyers.
1100+ft ascent / 10 mile is fairly typical for rides round here
